The Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer oversees all operational activities for the Department. The Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer works closely with the Director, the Deputy Director and Chief Engineer, the Assistant Chief of Administration and the Chief Fiscal Officer in the development of budgets and highway programs.
Randy Ort began his career with Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department in 1988. He was promoted from Public Hearing Specialist, to Assistant Public Affairs Officer, and finally to Public Information Officer in 2003. For most of his career, he served as the primary spokesman for the Arkansas Department of Transportation, and often represented ARDOT at local, state and national events. In early 2015, he was promoted to Assistant Chief – Administration, and in that role, he oversaw many of the non-engineering functions of the agency, including the Governmental Relations Office and the Human Resources, Information Technology, Fiscal Services, and Equipment and Procurement Divisions. Randy Ort assumed his current title of Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer in March 2020.
Ort is a graduate of North Little Rock Northeast High School and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, holding a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a major in Marketing.
Ort resides in Sherwood with his wife, Charlene. They are the proud parents of four children, and they have six grandchildren.
